ホテル-Hotel (reads: “hotel – hotel” is an ongoing long-term project by artist Josiane Keller. Begun in 2016, ホテル-Hotel is a slide show performance, drawing on her lens-based images of small hand-made puppets, that suggests a fictive narrative of a long-term residency hotel and its tenants, depicted in casual intimate snap-shots. Inspired by Nan Goldin’s “Ballad of Sexual Dependency”, Larry Clark’s “Tulsa”, and other photo-essays, ホテル-Hotel investigates seeing and visual memory, puppets as surrogates, the camera as a tool of “evidence”, and the aura of fetishism around images that depict the intimate lives of marginalized people. ホテル-Hotel has been exhibited as a photo-installation of small scale prints in Tokyo and Budapest. ホテル-Hotel will have its world premiere at Automata as a live/performed slide show.
