“Look deep into nature and then you will understand everything better.” — Albert Einstein
All of the artists included in CARBON are cognizant of their relationship to the chemical element of carbon, one of the most abundant substances in the universe and the basis of all known life. The decomposition of forms that were once alive reduces all matter to basic components. From these, new creation comes into existence. Carbon-related cycles participate in the energy produced by the sun and by the universe roiling beneath the earth’s surface. As Carl Sagan said, “The cosmos is also within us, we’re made of star stuff.” Each in their way address the importance of this framework to a more profound understanding of the nature of existence — some through materials and mediums, others through technique and subject, all with a heartily unique sense of the metaphorical potential of this concept.

Southland Ensemble : Byzantine Rites @ Automata
Jun 2 @ 8:00 pm

New Work by Laura Steenberge

Southland Ensemble concludes it’s 2017/18 season with the premiere of a new work by LA-based composer Laura Steenberge:

Byzantine Rites is a new collection of pieces in which chant-inspired musical textures accompany actions performed with household objects. The title speaks in part to the borrowing of fragments of medieval Byzantine chants to form the musical materials, and in part to the use of Byzantine to refer to unnecessarily complicated procedures.

This concert is presented in conjunction with the Dog Star 14th annual festival of experimental music.

PARANOID MACHINES

PARANOID MACHINES
Episode 3: FALLEN OBJECTS! (Space Paranoids part 2)

Exactly seventy one years ago this month, something crashed in the New Mexico Desert near the town of Roswell. It was an actual thing. It actually crashed. Beyond that fact, we just have stories which have mutated into the modern UFO mythos, with this fallen object at its foundation.

For this Paranoid Machines incident, we’ll unpack some of the epistemological tangle of the Modern UFO, and look at how it relates to something that happened a little ways down the road from Roswell, exactly seventy three years ago this month — the Trinity test. Road trip slide show included. Might talk about Q. Might get silenced by DeepState. Who knows??
